Planning a Kitchen Remodel
Are you planning a kitchen remodel and wondering how you can still have great meals at home with your family? Finding ways to eat at home during our kitchen remodel was a big concern for us.
We were already spending a ton of money on the remodel. We didn’t want to add a big expense of eating every meal out to what was going to be our biggest single investment in our home. We also wanted to make sure we maintained a healthy diet. With a little planning, thought and creativity we were able to survive a three month remodel and limit eating out to just once a week. The strategies that we used and were successful for us are outlined below.
Ways to Eat at Home – Planning
For the month prior to beginning our remodel we started cooking. On the weekends we would make big batches of our favorite recipes and freeze them in portions to have on hand. Some of the recipes we made were Louisiana Style Gumbo, Bolognese Sauce and Cajun Meatloaf. A great resource for Meal Prep is Living Well Spending Less Ruth and her team have created dozens of recipes for freezer meals.
We also used our Food Saver to package and store all of this food for freezing. We were going to a lot of trouble to prepare this food to sustain us during our remodel. Our Food Saver was critical to insuring we didn’t ruin or waste any of the meals due to freezer burn. We love our Food Saver so much that we use it every week to make our food last longer and save on our grocery bills.
Ways to Eat at Home – Create a Mini Kitchen
Create a mini kitchen in another area of your home. Our refrigerator and freezer were in our garage during the remodel so we had easy access. We set up a portable kitchen in our dining room. Where we stored plates, bowls, cups, and flatware. We also have a wet bar and easy access to water and a way to clean our dishes.
Ways to Eat at Home – Invest in Small Appliances
Several small appliances were very helpful during our remodel. These were our Crockpot, an induction burner and a small toaster oven. Some of the recipes we made using our small appliances are:
Easy Shrimp Recipe
Bucatini with Garlic, Basil and Tomatoes
Ways to Eat at Home – Use your Grill
Depending in the time of year and where you are located your outdoor grill is a great resource. We are fortunate enough to have a Green Egg, which can also be used as an oven. Some of our favorite meals that we prepare outside are:
Simple Chicken Stir Fry
Mongolian Beef with Vegetables
Marinated Grilled Pork Tenderloin
Ways to Eat at Home – Additional Options
Keep fresh fruit, yogurt, granola and make overnight oats for healthy breakfast options. Buy prepackaged salads like those made by Braga or Taylor Farms for an easy lunch or dinner choice.
With a little thought and planning there are easy and healthy ways to eat at home during your kitchen remodel. I hope these tips and recipes help you and your family eat delicious meals at home during your remodel. Do you have any tips or go to recipes that would be the perfect option during a remodel?
